While Bill Snyder and Frank Martin each spoke at length about their respective programs at the Wichita Catbacker event on Wednesday, their initial addresses to supporters were only a part of the information revealed, rehashed and championed to the crowd. Here are some other notables from Wichita. [details]
Notes: Parents are both ministers. High school quarterback, linebacker and safety who committed to Florida, but failed to qualify and spent two years at Northwest Mississippi Community College. Played nine games in 2006, rushing 69 times for 394 yards (5.7-yard average) and three touchdowns. Also completed 7-of-16 pass attempts (43.8 percent) for 128 yards with two TDs and zero interceptions. In '07, rushed 103-562-6 (5.5) and passed 24-51-450-2-3 (47.1) in eight games. Did not qualify for the '08 season and spent the year taking classes at Butler Community College (Kan.) and Manhattan (Kan.) Christian College to meet requirements. Started all 12 games in '09 for KSU and toted 247-1,265-11 (5.1) with 25 receptions for 257 yards (10.3) and zero TDs. Also completed 3-4-50-1-0 (75.0). Led the Big 12 in rushing for the second consecutive season in '10 - started 12-of-13 games, amassing 298-1,585-19 (5.3) with 27-171-0 (6.3) receiving. Has 11 fumbles in nearly 600 touches. Sat out at the Combine with a sprained left hamstring suffered in training.
Positives: Looks the part with excellent size. Terrific two-year production despite being keyed on weekly by opposing defenses. Fluid movement skills. Good balance and body control. Fine instincts and vision to pick his hole. Has quick feet and is agile for a big back. Can spin off contact and sidestep tacklers. Proved he can shoulder a lot of carries. Has soft hands and is able to adjust to the ball and turn upfield fairly quickly.
Negatives: Does not have breakaway speed and tends to build it up. Is not an instant accelerator and will need help gaining the edge. Carries the ball loosely away from his body and needs to improve ball security. Inconsistent inside runner. Runs upright and is not a bruiser - does not power through contact and dances more than he should. Struggles to create on his own. Can improve in pass protection. Best with simple assignments.
Summary: An athletic, finesse big back with build-up speed who does not dole out the type of physical punishment you would expect to see out of a runner his size. Has intriguing measurables, has proven durable and productive and should develop into a solid pro for teams that value balance such as the Bears, Packers or Saints.
