Notes: Two-way lineman as a California prep. Redshirted in 2006 as a defensive linemen. Played 12 games in '07, starting the final 11 at right guard. Started all 13 games at right guard in '08. Had back surgery in the spring and did not participate in the spring. Started all 11 games played in '09. Strained his left knee against Idaho and missed two games. Played and started just four games in '10 because of a nagging high ankle sprain. Blocked three career kicks. Academic All-American.
Positives: Looks the part. Has active hands. Plays with a solid base and can stop a charge and anchor in pass pro. Good patience. Is alert to the blitz and can sort out what he sees - nice eyes and anticipation. Very smart. Is tough and very hardworking. Outstanding intangibles. Highly respected team leader. Has practiced at center.
Negatives: Average arm length and foot quickness. Does not play with power or get off quickly. Too often stalemated. Labors to pull - looks like a train getting started - and is iffy to connect on the second level. Too heavy-legged.
Summary: Senior season was largely cut short by injury and did not distinguish himself at the East-West Shrine Game or in the three games (Boise State, Cincinnati and Illinois) that he said were his best. Has a make-it mentality and could earn his way into the swing interior job based on toughness, intelligence and competitiveness. Might even become a starter for a gritty, try-hard offensive line such as that of the Falcons, Patriots or Chiefs.
