Weekend visitor preview

When it comes to Georgia recruiting, very few weekends can match the excitement and notoriety of the Football Gala weekend.

The Gala, which took place last weekend at the Classic Center, was a bit smaller in 2011 than in years past, but it drew some of the biggest targets left on UGA's board.

This weekend may not have the numbers or publicity of last weekend, but it could prove to be equally as important.

Will Redmond: Memphis East (Tenn.) athlete Will Redmond is a player that has really captured the attention of the recruiting world in the last few weeks.

Redmond committed to Mississippi State, but told UGASports via text message that he did grow up a Georgia fan. He will take his first visit to the Classic City this weekend.

Redmond could be the top target left on UGA's board at defensive back, but he could line up on the offensive side of the ball at the next level as well.

Other schools such as Tennessee and Notre Dame have come calling in recent weeks, but sources close to Redmond believe that Georgia has a very good shot at the four star prospect, and that he could commit to Georgia and shut down his recruitment if he is blown away this weekend.

Sheldon Dawson: Ridgeway (Memphis, Tenn.) athlete Sheldon Dawson, a Memphis commit, is yet another name that is climbing up the Georgia recruiting board.

Dawson and Redmond are good friends, and while they haven't mentioned playing together at the next level, it appears that Georgia is working on both of them very hard at the moment.

Dawson revealed to UGASports.com that he does have an offer from the Bulldogs, and that Coach (Scott) Lakatos and (Todd) Coach Grantham were in his Wednesday to make sure that he knew he had an offer and would be visiting Athens this weekend.

No one knows whether or not Dawson is willing to decommit from the Tigers at this point, but it appears that he is taking a long, hard look at what UGA has to offer.

If Georgia offers him as a running back, there is no doubt that he would jump at the chance. If they continue to pursue him as a defensive back, then Georgia will have to work a bit harder for Dawson's signature.

Tyriq McCord: Jefferson (Tampa, Fla.) defensive end Tyriq McCord is being recruiting by the Bulldogs as an outside linebacker.

Grantham has made the outside linebacker position a priority for 2011, and while many believe McCord is a pipe dream for Georgia because South Carolina and Florida are thought to be the leaders, his head coach, Justin Earle, believes otherwise.

"Ramik (Wilson) was a stud, but Tyriq was always right there with him," said Coach Justin Earle. "They are really close. That's a big pull for Georgia in my opinion."

McCord has played things close to the vest, but the Georgia staff has done a good job of getting him on campus where almost anything can happen.

It appears that Georgia may be on the outside looking in at this point, but it isn't likely that anyone will find out differently as McCord has only done a couple of interviews in the last few months.

Those three prospects headline the weekend for UGA recruiting, but, as we saw last weekend with Cedar Grove offensive lineman Brandon Greene, anyone can show up at the last minute.

Defensive back and outside linebacker remain big areas of need for the 2011 class, and it appears that the Georgia staff is will be addressing those issues this weekend.
