Rivals250 DE down to three
Carlos Thompson knows quality defense.
The Hollandale (Simmons), Miss., defensive end is the cornerstone of a Blue Devils defense that has yet to allow a defensive touchdown this season. Simmons is 7-0 and a serious contender in Mississippi's 2A classification.
After a 44-0 rout of Greenville O'Bannon last Friday, Simmons has outscored opponents a combined 210-8. Thompson has 10 sacks and nearly 50 tackles in 2009.
"We've been very good at containing and tackling when we got the runners," said Thompson, who Rivals.com rates as a four-star prospect. "We have a chance to go a ways in the playoffs."
While Thompson is looking to conclude his high school career on a high note, the nation's No. 114 overall prospect is slowly clearing up his recruitment as well. Mississippi's third-ranked recruit is considering Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Baylor. A previous interview also included interest in Vanderbilt, but Thompson appears to have dropped the Commodores from consideration.
"The three schools are great places, and I think I'll find a home among that list," Thompson said.
Thompson and a few members of his family traveled to Oxford this past Saturday to take in Ole Miss' 22-3 loss to Alabama. Much like his high school team, Thompson saw a lot of great defense.
"Both teams did a good job on defense," Thompson said. "Ole Miss would be a fun defense to be a part of. The offense struggled, but I don't see that as a big part of the decision."
Ole Miss coaches Derrick Nix and Terry Price are recruiting Thompson, but head coach Houston Nutt also made a phone call this week to the defensive end.
"I have good relationship with the Ole Miss coaches, and they just want me to know they want me over there," Thompson said. "They think I'll fit in."
Official visits won't be scheduled for Thompson until after Simmons' season is completed.
