Athlete LaSteven McKinney battling for playoffs

The Central Michigan football program has developed quite a reputation for recruiting talented football players who excel at multiple positions on the gridiron. With that in mind, it's easy to see why CMU is after Broadview Nazareth Academy athlete LaSteven McKinney. McKinney shines as a wide receiver, running back and return specialist for his squad and has his team ripe for a playoff birth.

"Season is going good so far, we're 4-4 and we have a real important game against Carmel tonight," said McKinney. "We know that's going to be a tough game and a must win for us if we want to go to playoffs. Really, out playoffs start tonight."

While it's a foregone conclusion that McKinney will get his hands on the ball in multiple ways tonight, it brings up and interesting question of what position he projects at in college.

"I think at the next level I could play running back or in the slot, I'd like to be a slot/running back combo kind of likeReggie Bush. I just like to have the ball in my hands and the ability to make plays."

On the recruiting front, McKinney recently picked up an offer from Illinois State and plans on taking some official visits after his season concludes.

"I haven't planned any officials yet, I'll probably do that after the season is over," said McKinney. "Then I'll probably make it up to CMU and see the whole gameday atmosphere, but with my games being on Saturdays, it just makes it tough for me to get over there for a gameday visit. But, I am excited to see that aspect of Central Michigan and can't wait for my visit."

The Chippewas are still very much in the picture for McKinney, but may have to wait awhile for a solid decision.

"I plan on making my decision on Signing Day," added McKinney. "I'm going to do the whole pick a hat thing at my school and have that type of setup. I want to surprise my coaches and teammates, so that's going to be cool."
