Ponder's role changes to mentor


When Christian Ponder made a tackle on Clemson safety DeAndre McDaniel in the fourth quarter of Saturday's game it dramatically changed Florida State's prospects for the 2009 season. It also dramatically changed the junior quarterback's role on the team.



Until that hit, Ponder was not only the 'Noles' starting quarterback; he was the undisputed team leader. Now, he will become the chief mentor and advisor to freshman EJ Manuel, who will get his first start under center this Saturday.



"I need to be a leader at this point, that's all I can be, and I've got to help EJ through this," Ponder said. "EJ's going to play well... I'm going to help him out and be there for him and the rest of the guys."
