Maryland TE talks Big East offer

Bethesda (Md.) Georgetown Prep tight end Paul Phillips recently was offered by the Syracuse Orange and set up an official visit. A couple weeks later though there have been some changes made to his visit plan.

"I actually think I am going to be visiting now on December 11. I talked with Coach Elizondo last night and I think we cleared that all up."

Phillips, 6-foot-5, 225 pounds was excited when the Orange offer found its way to him. The three star prospect knows a handful of people who went or plan on going to Syracuse and he likes what he hears.

"They offered me about two or three weeks ago I don't know the exact date," Phillips said. "Syracuse is a great school so I am real interested. One of my brother's teammates Rice Moss actually played at Syracuse and graduated two years ago. My schools already had a couple other kids going to play sports at Syracuse. It is definitely a friendly familiar school. I am excited about it and it is a great academic school."

Syracuse will be losing two tight ends to graduation after this and when the season starts next season two other tight ends will be coming off of season ending injuries. The Orange need some added depth at the position and they think Phillips could fit in great for them.

"They think that they can do a lot of things with me. They think I can stay in as a blocker or flex out as a receiver and play more of an H-back role. That is definitely something I like to hear because I like being able to do a bunch of things."

Even though Syracuse just came in with an offer they have been watching the Maryland product for awhile now.

"Coach Elizondo has been recruiting me for awhile since basically my junior season. I have always enjoyed following Syracuse," Phillips said. "Our relationship has developed really well. He started talking to me early and it was kind of coincidental because one of his first coaching jobs was at my high school. He coached right before my head coach took over. He is really familiar with the whole area I live in and Georgetown Prep as a high school. It has been great getting to know him because he understands a lot about my school and the football we play."

Over the summer Phillips and his family made the trip up north to check out Syracuse. Exactly how was that trip?

"I went up and visited them this summer and met up with Coach Marrone and Coach Casullo the tight ends coach and I liked it a lot," Phillips added more about his visit. "I like New York as a State and I think Syracuse is a pretty cool town. It seemed like it was a good college town. We went to the "Dome" and checked everything out and that was pretty cool. The campus and everything was nice, I like it a lot. That is someplace where I can definitely see myself playing."

Now that he has seen the campus before and plans a return trip to Syracuse there is one thing that he wants to do that he didn't really have the chance to do on his summer visit.

"I am really looking forward to meeting some of the other recruits. It is supposed to be a big official weekend. Coach Casullo said that they are going to have a bunch of their commitments there. I already met the quarterback commit from Colorado when I was up there over the summer, so I am really looking forward meeting a bunch of other guys who are committed to Syracuse and why they like it."

The high school season is over for Phillips now, but he is pleased with the way it all turned out.

"I thought it was a good year for me. We run the ball about seventy-five percent of the time, so I didn't get the craziest stats. I felt I blocked well and I had like 25 catches for 300 yards and a couple touchdowns."

A decision is something that the tight end prospect is not thinking about yet, but he knows the time is coming.

"I have been thinking about it. I don't think I am ready to do that yet. I would say maybe end of December or January after I get my visits in and figure everything out."
