Spartans after Florida DT

The Michigan State Staff is scouring the nation to address the defensive tackle spot for the class of 2010. Recently they offered 6-foot-3, 265-pound Roney Lozano of American High School in Hialeah, Florida. spoke with Lozano last night, and got the details on his recruitment.

Until a few weeks ago Lozano was flying way under the radar of many colleges. However, his senior highlight tape was sent out and now his stock is rising significantly. Michigan State offered Lozano last week and they are not the only team turning up the heat.

"I now have offers from Michigan State, Maryland, Florida International and Middle Tennessee," Lozano said.

Michigan State is very serious about Lozano's recruitment. The Spartans would like to add one, if not two, defensive tackles to the class. Lozano provided us with some details about receiving his scholarship from Michigan State and his intentions.

"Both Coach Staten and Coach Dantonio came to my school," he said "I got the offer from Coach Dantonio. I am going up there for a visit on January 15th."

So could Lozano make a commitment after checking out the Spartans?

"Well I have been told that I will know when it feels right so I guess I will just wait and see if I get that feeling."

Lozano had a strong senior year for American High School and his continued improvement garnered him several post season honors. He was named to the All-Dade County Team and was selected to play in the North/South All-Star Game. will continue to follow-up with Lozano in the coming weeks. It is very possible that his offer list could expand greatly between now and signing day 2010

Michigan State is not the only Big Ten that is in the mix, the Michigan Wolverines are also evaluating Lozano and an offer could be forthcoming.

Both the Spartans and Wolverines are looking for defensive tackle prospects. Both teams are after several of the same prospects (Jibreel Black for one) and how things play out with those players will have a direct impact on the recruitment of other players.
