Igras looking for football tradition
The list of Phoenix-area preps who have gone on to play Division I football is long and distinguished. Notre Dame Prep defensive end Peter Igras hopes to join that list this season and seems to have the athletic skill and grades to do just that.
Igras has been measured out at 6-foot-3 and 235 pounds. He reports a 4.9 time in the 40-yard dash, a 305-pound bench press and a 430-pound squat. The unanimous All-Region selection led his high school team with 83 tackles, 6.5 sacks and two forced fumbles last season.
"I guess I am pretty strong all around," Igras said. "Stopping the run is one of my best things. I am a pretty good bull rusher."
In the classroom he has a 3.1 grade-point average and has test scores high enough to get the attention of Harvard and Yale. The Scottsdale native has already visited Northern Arizona and liked what he saw.
"My sister went there," Igras said of Northern Arizona. "It is a nice campus and a nice city to live in. I like the coaches too."
In addition to NAU the Ivy League, Igras said he is hearing from Boise State and was asked by Colorado State to send in a highlight tape. Igras said he hopes to major in Sports Medicine or Chemistry. He added he doesn't mind the idea of leaving the state to attend college and has some thoughts on what he is looking for in a college.
"I am looking for a good football school," he said. "Right now, I don't know if that Ivy League setting would be the greatest for me, but I think I will keep everything open. Who knows? I am looking for a school with a strong football tradition, a nice campus, good coaches."
