Ballentine going to sleep with choice made
Memphis defensive back Lonnie Ballentine is set for a busy and very exciting day on Monday as the Southwind High School standout will not only announce his college selection, but is also signing his name to his future school.
The 6-foot-3, 193-pound defensive back was set to be a member of the class of 2011, but a change of heart and advancement academically left Ballentine a choice to be either a member of next year's signing class of a late member of the 2010 signing class.
"It's always been an option," Ballentine said. "I wasn't sure if I wanted to skip my last year and miss my senior season and possible all-star games and stuff, but after talking with my parents signing now is the right decision."
Ballentine said the risk of injury was a factor, plus at 6-3, 193 pounds, he feels he's ready physically to play at the college level.
"I have the physical size and mentally, I think I am ready for the adjustment of going to college," Ballentine offered.
So Monday, Ballentine's recruitment will come to an end. Actually in Ballentine's mind and heart it has already ended.
"I know where I am going," Ballentine said. "I prayed about it last night (Saturday) and talked it over with my family. Then I woke up this morning (Sunday) knowing I had made the right choice.
"It feels great to know that I have picked the right school for me."
Ballentine, who has said his relationship with coaches as well as how he fits scheme-wise in the defense and the mentality of the program are major factors in his decision, will announce his college choice Monday afternoon at 2:30 ET. And he will announce from a list of six schools.
"It will be Arkansas, LSU, Alabama, Tennessee, Memphis or Ole Miss," Ballentine explained. "I know who it will be, and Monday morning I will call all of the schools and let them know what school I will be attending."
