McCune focused on making the grade

Not much has changed in the recruitment of Saginaw High's Tommie McCune, but the 6-7, 185-pound forward understands he has some work to take care of in the classroom before his recruitment skyrockets like many of the Class of 2011 prospects that join him on national top 100 lists.

Rivals.com rates McCune a four-star power forward and ranks him the No. 87 prospect overall in the Class of 2011.

"Actually it's still the same schools, Xavier and Providence," McCune told SpartanMag.com about his offers. "But a lot of schools are going to wait to offer until after the school year because of a bad freshman and sophomore year (academically). I've picked it up a lot, and right now it's good enough for me to be offered, but they want to wait and make sure because I can still slip and mess up.

"I know Michigan wants to offer me and Michigan State wants to offer me, and a couple other schools want to offer me, but it's just that they want to wait until school is out."

Being from Saginaw, McCune lives in a very MSU-friendly area, where Spartan success stories such as Jason Richardson and most recently Draymond Green started and the continued in East Lansing under the tutelage of Tom Izzo.

McCune's zip code and connection to players like Green, who he considers a good friend, have led to relaxing recruiting visits at MSU.
