Mullings will enroll this fall
When punter Jonny Mullings verbally committed to the Hawkeyes last fall, the original plan was to use a grayshirt and bring him in on scholarship in January of 2011. As is often the case however, the situation has changed, and now Mullings will be enrolling this fall instead.
The 6-foot-4, 215-pound Bristol, England native, who is now living in Australia, is coming in as a punter, but with starter Ryan Donahue heading into his senior year, the more immediate need for the Hawkeyes may be on kickoffs.
Mullings grew up playing rugby, but experienced American Football in 2006 when he spent some time in Ottumwa, Iowa, as an exchange student. Punting for the JV team because of a state high school ruling on his visa, the left-footer showed a tremendous leg, including an 85-yard punt that his coaches still remember to this day.
After his family moved to Australia, Mullings kept working on his punting and had a 45.1 yard average playing for a local team a year ago. He sent out film to a number of schools, including Iowa, and received quite a bit of interest, but wanted to get back to the Hawkeye State. Now, he will be doing that sooner rather than later and will be with the Iowa football team for the 2010 season.
