Hokies make the cut for star TE
Despite offers continuing to come in, one of the nation's top tight ends is now focusing on narrowing his list. The Hokies have made the cut amongst the top ten for the star out-of-state prospect.
"South Florida, Iowa, Oregon and Penn State offered me," Westerville, Ohio tight end Nick Vannett said. "The schools that have made my top list are Iowa, Michigan State, Ohio State, Oregon, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Purdue, Tennessee, Virginia Tech and Wisconsin."
What happened to Arizona, Michigan and South Florida?
"Those schools I'm no longer interested in or can I see myself going there."
Meanwhile, what makes the other schools make the cut?
"All of those schools have great reputations for using their tight ends and I want to end up at a place where I know that I am going to be used and where I can excel at."
Vannett's next move is to take some visits and then proceed to a decision.
"I have it pretty set," he said. "I haven't finalized plans yet, but I'm going to Tennessee and Virginia Tech for visits. Once I complete those, I'll start researching more on these schools to get a feel for which ones could potentially be in my top five and go from there.
"Right now I have no favorites at this point. I am planning to make my decision by the end of July."
It's clear the Hokies and Volunteers will get visits in the coming weeks. Vannett went on about those two and why he wants to see them.
"Virginia Tech is in dire need of tight ends and I feel like I have an opportunity to see some playing time early on there. I don't know too much more on Virginia Tech other than what Coach Sherman has told me. That's why I'm looking forward to the trip there," he said. "The same goes for Tennessee and the chance for playing time. Coach Dooley is a former tight end coach, so that tells me that he is going to feature them in the offense."
Despite plans to visit both schools relatively soon, Vannett has no specific date set.
The 6-foot-6, 230-pounder posted 20 receptions for 240-yards and two touchdowns as a junior.
