Kansas lands big surprise with DE
Sometimes it pays off to have a scholarship or two available after signing day. In the case of the Kansas football program it will play a big part in helping land Julian Green.
Green is an all-area and all-district defensive end from Aldine High became a hot target of late picking up offers from Kansas, Iowa State, and Louisiana Tech.
"I didn't take my SAT until later and I found out my scores were good enough to qualify," Green said. "I thought I was going to a junior college and then I got my test back. Once that happened my coach said he started to get a lot of phone calls about me."
Green took a visit to Louisiana Tech and this week to Kansas. He was scheduled to visit Iowa State but that one won't take place.
"I'm going to Kansas," he said. "I made my mind up that's where I want to go. I really liked my visit there and I got along with all of the coaches. I want to play against bigger and better schools. I think Kansas can help me get to the next level."
The Kansas coaches told Green they really liked his film and the athleticism he brings. At 6-foot-7, 245 pounds he caught several coaches attention when he qualified. He was selected to play in the Space City Classic All-Star game. Last weekend he played in the Blue Chip game.
Kansas assistant Buddy Wyatt was the lead recruiter for Green. He also liked talking with Turner Gill on his trip.
"Coach Wyatt was a business man and he was straight up," Green said. "I liked how he recruited me. I remember when I was walking into coach Gill's office and I was real nervous. But when I walked in he had some good music going on and that made me feel more comfortable right away. Coach Gill and Wyatt were cool people."
Green will report to Kansas this summer and will get ready to play this fall. He was an all-area and all-district selection at Aldine.
