MSU commitment makes return trip to Ole Miss

Jermaine Whitehead was once again competing on the playing surface at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium Saturday.

Six days after wowing coaches and prospects alike at Ole Miss Elite Camp, the four-star cornerback from Greenwood, Miss., was back in Oxford, this time participating in a 7-on-7 tournament with his Amanda Elzy High School teammates.

The return trip gave Whitehead a chance to renew acquaintances with an Ole Miss staff that he's grown quite close to.

"I'm most definitely talking with the guys here," Whitehead said.

Further, Whitehead admitted that he's in continuous contact with several of Mississippi's other elite talents, and their decisions could impact his.

"Donte Moncrief likes Ole Miss a lot," Whitehead said prior to checking in for the start of tournament. "Nick (Nickalos Brassell likes Ole Miss, too. They've got Ole Miss in their top two or three. I told them, 'If this is the place, I might be here you.'"

Whitehead, a 6-foot, 183-pounder who ran a 4.47-second 40-yard dash at Ole Miss' camp last weekend, said he still considers himself committed to Mississippi State.

"As far as anything goes, I'll go to State," Whitehead said. "State has a lot of young talent."

However, the nation's No. 18 cornerback prospect (according to Rivals.com) admitted he's far from ready to sign on the dotted line.

"The heat is still between Ole Miss and Mississippi State," Whitehead said. "It's still my decision. I like both."

Whitehead wouldn't rule out leaving the Magnolia State for college, either, though that seems unlikely.

"It depends on how things go," Whitehead said. "I like Auburn a lot, too."

Whitehead played safety and running back/slot receiver on Saturday. He said he still wants to play some offense when he gets to the college game.

"I would like the rock," Whitehead said, smiling. "It just depends on how I feel. I know I have to bring my A-game. I've got some A-game. I always bring mine to the table."
