Along came Jones

During spring camp there was a young Bruin GA assistant who provided energy and intensity for UCLA's young, but very talented cornerbacks. As a group they got better as spring camp went along. The GA assistant who was tough, but fair is Daronte Jones. His young players really responded to him and he could be key in getting the massive amount potential out of his group.

Jones took the road less traveled on his way to UCLA. He was the defensive coordinator for Bowie State, a Division II team in Maryland, where his squads were in the top 10 statistically in five different defensive categories. Jones heard about Carnell Lake's departure and first sent his resume to see if he could get an interview to replace Lake.

"It was a tough decision to leave, but I saw that Carnell Lake had left for family reasons," Jones said. "So I emailed Coach Rick Neuheisel and Coach Chuck Bullough in reference to the cornerbacks position and Coach Bullough responded to my email who said we promoted from within and hired Lea, but he asked if I would be interested in coaching cornerbacks as a GA.
