Top 150 player visits CSU

Minneapolis guard Joe Coleman came back from his visit to Fort Collins with a renewed perspective on Colorado State. The 6-foot-3 Hopkins High School holds scholarship offers from UC-Santa Clara, Minnesota and the CSU Rams.

Coleman is ranked the number 104 player nationally by Rivals.com and the 30th shooting guard after scoring 25 points per game a year ago. He said his visit to Colorado State last week was a very successful one.

"It is a lot more than what I expected," Coleman said of CSU. "I thought it would be a little town. It was a lot nicer than I thought it was going to be. They got a new practice facility and the school has added.

"It went real well," he continued. "I got to visit the campus, talk with Coach Miles and got to play with the guys in Open Gym."

His visit to CSU was the third he has taken this year. Coleman said he went to UC-Santa Clara previously and enjoyed the coaches, saying, "It looks like their program is going in the right direction. It was a nice place."

The offer from the home-state Gophers was a welcome surprise for Coleman. Coleman said his brother played at Minnesota and he is very familiar with the Gopher program and the coaching staff.

Thus far, Coleman said he has no favorites, but Colorado State sounds like it has his attention.

"I am real close to Coach Niko Medved," Coleman said of the Ram assistant coach. "He coached with my brother at Minnesota. Coach Miles has a good track record and I like him as a person. Each season they get better and better. It is a plus as far what I am looking at for this year."

This summer Coleman will play AAU basketball for the Howard Pulley Panthers and will be playing in Milwaukee, Kansas City among other cities. Coleman said he is looking forward to more time on the court after playing behind the nation's number one recruit, Harrison Barnes of Ames, Iowa last year.

"I've been working hard on my game, but I think I finally got my opportunity to show what I had," he said.
