Tide in top five for West Coast back

Livermore (CA) Granada athlete George Atkinson is the latest West Coast prospect to show serious interest in the Crimson Tide as Alabama's national recruiting reputation continues to grow in the wake of their recent BCS national championship. Atkinson was in Tuscaloosa this week for the Tide's summer camp and came away with plenty of positive feelings about the Tide.

"I was there all day on Tuesday," Atkinson said. "We started in the morning working straight away on individual drills and then moved to some one-on-one competition drills. I worked at running back, which is the position Alabama is recruiting me for."

The 6-foot-2, 194-pound star came into the camp looking to learn more about Tuscaloosa and the Alabama campus to see if he would be comfortable playing in a place so far from home.

"After the morning practice was over, we toured the campus and got a chance to see some of the buildings, the dorms and the stadium. Everything there is really amazing, it's a great campus. After the tour, we got back and did another practice in the afternoon that was similar to the stuff we did in the morning."

"After the second practice was over, I talked to Coach Williams and Coach Saban about the offense Alabama runs, how they use their running backs and what kind of role I would play if I came to Alabama. I think I fit the same kind of mold of the two running backs they have now. I'm pretty big and I like to play physical and run between the tackles."

The four-star back will swing by Miami for an unofficial visit before heading back home but for now leaves the South with his list narrowed down to five top contenders.

"I would say after this camp, Alabama is definitely one of my top schools at this point. They are up there with Miami, Oregon, USC and Notre Dame as my top five schools. Alabama has so much to offer and they look like they are going to be strong for the next several years."

Atkinson is the No. 15 athlete prospect in the nation and the No. 102 overall prospect.
