Holmes impressed with Austin, sets visits

Two weeks ago, it almost looked like that the recruiting process for San Antonio Antonian forward Jonathan Holmes was nearing an end, almost before it had seemingly even gotten started. Holmes took an unofficial visit to Texas A&M and the Aggies were his favorite both prior and immediately after the trip. However, after a conversation with Texas head coach Rick Barnes, Holmes had indicated that he wanted to take an unofficial visit to Texas after he saw A&M. He originally wanted to take the visit in September but instead wound up taking it last weekend and the visit changed everything for Holmes.

"It was nice," he said. "I liked it. It was kind of spur of the moment. It was just me and a couple of friends of mine from high school."

The most unusual part of the trip was the fact that much of it did not revolve around basketball.

"I already saw the facilities (Holmes visited Texas unofficially in June)" he said. "I didn't see any basketball things. Alexis Wanagmere was there but no one else was. The arena floor wasn't down because something was going on. After that, I went on campus, met the athletic director, and saw the football stuff after that. The best part was meeting Mack Brown at their football practice."

However, the part that was about basketball caught Homes' attention.

"I was with coach Ogden and coach Terry the whole time" he said. "They talked about early playing time. They showed me their roster and said that they have an opening for me."

In addition, it didn't hurt Texas' cause that Holmes had a conversation with former Texas star and current NBA player Kevin Durant last week.

'I talked to him on the phone last week before I took the visit," Holmes said. "He said that he had a great time at Texas, that it's a family atmosphere and that the coaches are good and stuff. He didn't play a role (in Holmes taking the visit). I just wanted to see what my teammates thought of it. It's like 45 minutes or an hour away. It's not like a long drive or anything."

At the present time, Holmes has set up three official visits: Baylor on September 3, Purdue on September 17, and Texas on September 25. Baylor and Purdue had been in contact throughout the recruiting process with Holmes but had been unsuccessful at getting visits out of him until now.

"My parents like coach Drew," said Holmes. "He's pretty cool guy. I've talked to him a little before. I honestly don't know about Purdue. My parents wanted me to go up there."

After having had A&M as his leader until his visit to the College Station campus, Holmes was asked about his current favorites.

"I guess the schools I'm taking officials to," he said. "I guess A&M too. I don't even know right now. They are still on my list. I haven't talked to A&M (since the visit). I'm still trying to figure things out right now."

With official visits set up, does this mean that a decision is coming soon?

"I'm looking at making a decision right after Texas," he said. "If I don't take any more officials. There's a possibility."
