Ifedi likes "family atmosphere" at A&M

Even though Houston Westside left guard Germain Ifedi hasn't even stepped into a classroom as a junior yet, his fellow linemen are already looking up to him. Considering that he's 6 feet, 5 inches tall and weighs 310 lbs., that's understandable. It's the idea that they're expecting him to be their leader that might be a little intimidating, but Ifedi takes it in stride.

"We lost four seniors from last year's line, so it's been a tough transition. The coaches are pushing me to be a leader, so I have to do it," he said. "It definitely doesn't affect me; people are always looking at me, even when I go to sit down and eat. You've just got to keep doing what you've been doing."

What he's been doing is catching the attention of schools from around the country, including TCU, Texas Tech, Oregon, Arizona, Texas and UCLA. But there's one other school that he places right at the top of his list.

"I really like Texas A&M," he said. "I was up there for three days in July and just liked the place as a whole. They have great facilities, great tradition and good academics."

But there was something else that stuck out to Ifedi during his stay in College Station.

"It was just seeing how they treated everybody who came through there; it didn't matter if they were recruiting them or not, they treated them like family, like they were their own kids," he said. "It didn't matter if you were a big-time player or a third-string quarterback or the waterboy. They treated everyone the way you would want to be treated."

Ifedi said he's developed a good rapport with the Aggie coaching staff.

"I've talked to coach Toth, coach Turner; I sat down with coach Sherman when I was up there. Heck, I've even talked to Dat (Nguyen)," he said.

So do the Aggies merit finalist consideration at this point?

"It's them and TCU, with UCLA as a darkhorse," he said. "They've been dropping hints they'll offer (Sept. 1). I hope they do."
