Mullen talking Alcorn State
In 2009 Mississippi State became the first Southeastern Conference program to square off against an opponent from the Southwestern Athletic Conference in their 45-7 season opening win over Jackson State.
The Bulldogs will again host a instate SWAC opponent this weekend when Alcorn State travels to Starkville for an 11 a.m. contest.
"We're getting ready and obviously very excited about this week's game to play an instate rival," said MSU head coach Dan Mullen. "It's a team from the SWAC Conference and I think it's only the second time an SEC school has played a SWAC team. We're very excited about the historical importance of this game especially within our state."
The Bulldogs are coming off a 24-12 win over Georgia this past weekend to notch their first SEC victory of the season and even their overall record at 2-2. Mullen is hoping his team will be able to capitalize on the victory and propel them to greater heights the remainder of the year.
"Hopefully coming in here our team is going to carry over some momentum from last week with the win," Mullen said. "Our players were able to make some plays even though I think there are a lot of little things we need to improve on as a football team. We need to capture that momentum with a young football team and help that momentum carry us into this week and hopefully the rest of the season."
