Coach confident in young CB

EAST LANSING - Back in February on signing day, there was a feeling on the Spartan staff that Twiggs County (Georgia) athlete Darqueze Dennard might be one of the biggest steals in their 2010 recruiting class.

"You want to have all of the best players that you can get no matter what star they are or what they are rated," said defensive backs coach Harlon Barnett. "To be able to get a player like that, that didn't even come to camp and to come in here and to perform like he has, we are excited to have him."

During his career as a college football coach Mark Dantonio has coached more than two dozen defensive backs that went on to the NFL. During training camp Dennard displayed many of the qualities that have helped so many Dantonio-coached defensive backs find success in college and at the professional level.

"He had an excellent summer," said Dantonio. "He is a tremendous player. He has great ball skills. He is tough, he is smart. He is a very good tackler and he played at a high level. He was the runner-up in the 100 meters in Georgia, so he has great speed. I believe in him."
