GBK Inside the Huddle: Recruiting Updates

The Prospects

Kicker Daniel Grochowski's status is still up in the air as he has narrowed his choices down to Army and Florida.

Honestly, we don't follow walk-on kickers that closely. The Gators have invited a handful probable walk-on kickers in over the last couple of weeks in order to determine who would accept preferred walk-on status. Then every spring they hold another open tryout among the student body (those who have prior placekicking and soccer experience), but those kids rarely ever get in a game. As a matter of fact, when Florida's top two kickers went down this year, instead of turning to one of those types of kids, the staff their punter Chas Henry attempting field goals (and his miss cost them MSU game).

Although 3-star linebacker Cody McCarthy recently committed to Eastern Washington, he anxiously awaits his upcoming official visit to Army this weekend.

"I am really looking forward to my visit," shares McCarthy who acknowledges that his commitment is soft at the moment. "I want to see West Point and I know it will be a great time … I'm excited to see it. The Army knows that I committed elsewhere, but they still want me to come out and they have been supportive throughout. One of the reasons that I committed to Eastern Washington is because they have a great physical therapy schools and that is my interest."

As most Army fans know, defensive lineman Derrick Luetjen committed elsewhere, but making his way to visit this weekend is 6-foot-2, 290 pound defensive tackle Tyrone Brown. The prospect out of Florida would be a great pick up for the Black Knights and would make for the Black Knights missing out on a few high profile tackles like 4-star Washington commit, Danny Shelton and 3-star Stanford commit, Anthony Hayes.

There was some confusion earlier today by our staff on Dalton Mendenhall's commitment status. Long story short, the DE/LB is a verbal commit to Army and a solid pick-up.

Other Notables:

It remains Army and Navy for the talents of Athlete Jimmy Britton who is a commit (soft) to Navy, but visited Army this weekend.

Britton is scheduled to take an official visit to the Naval Academy after National Signing Day … more specifically; he will visit the Midshipmen the weekend of February 4th. Could that change and Britton become a Black Knight prior to National Signing Day? Absolutely!

"Big" running back Greg Rabb will be on campus this weekend. The 6-foot-0, 225 pound bruiser can make things happen both inside and on the edge.

Rabb will be visiting Lafayette tomorrow, followed by making his way to Army this weekend. "I'm really high on Army and most definitely looking forward to my visit to West Point," he shared on Sunday.

If you want to know how solid Army's commitments are, what hot prospects are still on the Army radar and which schools the Black Knights are battling for various prospects, then keep it here on GBK, where we will have continuous daily recruiting reporting all the way to our National Signing Day coverage.
