Spring forward, the cornerbacks
It was after the Meineke Car Care Bowl, Dec. 27, 2008, that West Virginia cornerbacks coach David Lockwood was asked about starting a then-redshirt freshman in place of Brandon Hogan, who was suspended from the Charlotte festivities due to an undisclosed medical issue.
"Because he listens," said Lockwood of Keith Tandy.
At his disposal in the week leading up to the Mountaineers' 31-30 victory over North Carolina were young, emerging players who lacked Hogan's experience. Hogan was developing into WVU's cover corner, but Coach had to pick between redshirt freshman Tandy and/or Guesly Dervil, Anthony Wood, Kent Richardson, and then-sophomore Brantwon Bowser.
