Georgia athlete 'getting pretty close'

Carnell Boyd is still building his offer list.

However, the 5-foot-11, 182-pound athlete from Atlanta (Westlake), Ga., is getting "pretty close" to choosing his college home.

Boyd gave Ole Miss a long look earlier this month at the Rebels' elite camp.

"The facility is nice," Boyd said. "The campus is real nice. The coaches were very fundamental. They taught me a lot and gave me some things to work on."

Boyd said Oklahoma State, UCLA, and "pretty much all the SEC schools" have remained in steady contact, though Central Florida, Arkansas State and Buffalo are the only programs to have extended offers so far.

Boyd worked at wide receiver during his day at Ole Miss. The Rebels are also looking at Boyd as a potential defensive back.

"Ole Miss offered our running back (Charles Purnell) and our safety (Antonio Thomas)," Boyd said. "They told me to come up here so they could get a good look at me. (Ole Miss wide receivers coach Gunter Brewer) was talking to me. He said he liked what he saw and would get back to me."

Boyd spent last weekend at Georgia. He also plans to camp at Florida State, North Carolina, Boston College and possibly Hawaii this summer.

"I'm getting pretty close," Boyd said. "There are some schools that are showing some strong interest and seem to be a good fit for me.

"It's pretty much wide open, but there are some schools that are starting to catch my eye."

Boyd said he's strongly considering committing before senior season, "but I might leave it open to see what comes out. I haven't decided yet."
