Newest Spartan will be a big target

Yesterday Michigan Stat received a commitment from Kyle Kerrick of Coatesville Area Senior High School in Pennsylvania. SpartanMag.com was able to catch up with Kerrick and get some details about his decision to become a member of the 2012 recruiting class.

Kerrick recently made a recruiting trip to the Midwest and checked out three of the school that were actively recruiting him, Michigan State, Illinois and Cincinnati. After returning, Kerrick decided to put an end to his recruitment and make his pledge to become a Michigan State Spartan. We asked him about his decision.

"Michigan State just felt right," Kerrick stated. "I really got a long well with the coaches and Michigan State is big football. The coaches were excited when I told them, they asked me if I was sure and I said yes."

One of the reason why the Spartans like Kerrick is due to his overall size and athleticism. We asked him what he currently check in at and what position the Spartans staff likes him for. Kerrick also talked about the other schools that offered him a scholarship.

"They want me as a wide receiver," he said. "I am 6-foot-3 and a quarter and I weigh 193-pounds. I also had scholarship offers from Illinois, Pittsburgh, West Virginia, Temple, Akron, Cincinnati and Syracuse."

The commitment of Kerrick gives Michigan State a big target for the future. The staff is losing 3 wide receivers to graduation this year and Kerrick will likely be looked at as someone who can come in and assume a role similar what B.J Cunningham has done for the Spartans.

Like Cunningham, look for Kerrick to fill out and big a physical player in the 220-pound range. That will make him a difficult match-up for small cornerbacks.

An important factor in Kerrick's recruitment is that he visited Michigan State with his family earlier this month. His mother told Spartanmag.com that both she and Kyle were very impressed with everything the Spartan program had to offer. Kerrick's time on campus allowed him to build rapport with the Michigan State coahcing staff and that is what ultimately sealed the deal.

SpartanMag.com will have more details on the commitment of Kerrick in the near future.
