Govan gets off to a strong start
After losing in the state championship game a year ago, Nardo Govan and Savannah Christian have their aim back on getting back to Atlanta and the Georgia Dome.
The Raiders are out of the gate at 2-0 having outscored their opponents 72-7 in their first two contests.
"Things have been going good," Govan said. "Each week is coming along a lot better. We're just tuning things up and I'm feeling good about our season right now. We are working on playing every game like it's our last. That's how we look at it right now. Even though it was just the second game you've still got to prepare."
Last week Savannah Christian, ranked No. 3 in Class A, knocked off Wheeler County 42-7 on the road. The Raiders rushed for 370 yards on 41 carries in that victory.
"It was pretty good win," Govan said. "They came out in their black jerseys trying to intimidate us I guess. We just came out there and played our football. At first it was a little shaky but we pulled ourselves together and played Raider ball and that's how we ended up beating them."
This week Govan hopes to help keep his squad's winning streak alive at home against Jenkins County.
Not much has changed in regards to Govan's recruitment. The 6-foot-3, 225-pound three-star tight end prospect still has a lone offer from Mississippi State. He visited Starkville over the summer and came away impressed with what the Bulldogs offer.
"I went up there for a camp over the summer and I thought it was really good," Govan said. "I like the coaches, the environment and I like the place. It seems real cool."
Govan stated that he was unable to watch MSU's 59-14 victory over Memphis last Thursday due to studying but he is planning to attend a game in person this season.
"I'm going to try to make it for a visit to Mississippi State if we get a bye week," Govan said. "I'm hoping I can."
Savannah Christian's bye week falls on Sept. 23 which is the weekend the Bulldogs host Louisiana Tech.
