Life in the fast Lane

Miami (Fla.) native Elston Lane is high on the Demon Deacons. The 6-foot-1 and 180-pound wide receiver has Wake Forest in his top three along with Florida International and Vanderbilt.

"I already went up to Wake for an unofficial," Lane said. "I pretty much know about them, so I'm not really rushing to go up there. FIU is right up the street."

Lane's senior year at Northwestern is off to a bad start with losses in its preseason game and regular season opener, but he is optimistic and is confident in his development individually as a receiver.

"I'm doing pretty good," Lane said. "I've gotten a lot better as a total receiver. I've gotten a lot faster. I've gotten a lot stronger, quicker in my routes. I feel that I've gotten a lot better, and I've progressed a lot."

That may be what caught Wake Forest wide receivers coach Lonnie Galloway's attention, because Lane made clear that the two have a special connection.

"Me and Coach Galloway have a real close relationship," Lane said. "He's telling me I've got a shot at coming over there. He said I may not start, but he said I definitely have a shot to come over there, and play right away. He said I'm definitely what they're looking for."

The three-star recruit said he talks more than just football with Galloway, and really enjoys the coach, and has found him interesting as a person.

He said that Galloway told him that he could potentially step in as the go-to receiver once Chris Givens leaves the program.

"I'm a big physical receiver, and I break a lot of tackles," Lane said. "After I catch the ball I try to get YAC yardage. I'm always determined to score. I use my body to my advantage. I barely drop balls. Receivers need to catch the ball. Dropping balls is a no, no to me."

Lane hopes to choose a school by the end of the season, and maybe even before that.

"I told myself, I told my parents I'm not looking back, because the schools that offered me so far I feel like they really want me, and they've really put in their time and effort in to trying to get me, because they came at me early," Lane said.
