The Weekly 6-pack...keys to beating the Cougars
The Beavers take a break from PAC 12 play this weekend to host the Brigham Young University Cougars (4-2). Oregon State is looking to build upon their first victory of the season when they beat the Arizona Wildcats last weekend inside Reser Stadium.
BYU had a rough start to their season as they lost a close game at Texas, before getting blown out by Utah at home. They are currently riding a three-game win streak over the likes of Central Florida, Utah St. and San Jose St.
The Beavers are riding high coming off the win over Arizona and should be looking for a victory against BYU. Here's what they need to do to ensure one.
1. Capitalize on BYU Turnovers
The Cougars turn the ball over at an alarming rate. Over their first six games, the BYU offense has turned the ball over 15 times and only forced 11 turnovers, a -4 turnover margin.
Against the only other PAC 12 team they have faced, a little over a month ago, Utah forced the Cougars into turning the ball over 7 times. Last week, a below average defense in San Jose State picked off quarterback Riley Nelson twice and forced a fumble, all in the red zone.
That speaks well for a resurgent Beavers defense as they have one of the more opportunistic units in the conference. The unit has forced 8 turnovers over the last 2 games.
What's even better is that the offense is taking full advantage of these extra opportunities. On 7 of those 8 extra possessions the Beavers have answered with points on the board. If the Beavers can continue to force turnovers as they have the past two games and then turn those turnovers into points, it will bode well for them in the end.
