Rutgers commit re-affirms
When Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano decided to leave for the NFL on Thursday, the current Rutgers recruiting class was all stunned and left in disbelief. While many of them took visits this weekend and others met privately and re-confirmed their commitment, one of the best in the class waiting until Sunday night to make up his mind.
"I sort of re-affirmed my decision to go to Rutgers at our football banquet tonight," said four-star wide receiver Leonte Carroo. "Coach Toal introduces everyone one-by-one and asks what college you planned to attend and I told everyone 'I am committed to Rutgers and I will still be going there. I chose Rutgers for many things and for my family'. I still plan on Signing Wednesday."
Carroo, a 6-foot-1, 205-pounder, said he is anxiously awaiting the naming of a new head coach.
"I hear it will be Monday or Tuesday so I am looking forward to that," he said. "I have heard a few names and I am just hoping its someone that I fit in well with and that coach Cignetti and coach Hafley will still be part of the staff. I feel confident they will get the right person."
Carroo does have a couple of backup schools in mind in case something happens between Sunday and Signing Day, but didn't want to mention them for a few reasons.
"I don't think I'll need any backup and I don't want other Rutgers recruits to think I'm not solid," he said. "I'm going to Rutgers. It's always been the right choice for me."
Carroo's best friend and teammate, five-star defensive tackle Darius Hamilton, was also at the banquet after returning from an official visit to Miami.
"I think he's still announcing on TV Tuesday night," said Carroo. "I hope he picks Rutgers but I don't know. I know he liked Miami a lot and Florida has always been one of his favorites so we'll see. It would help a lot if a coach is named very soon."
In the meantime, Carroo is ready for this to be over.
"The next few days will be good I think," he said. "I hope everyone else sticks with Rutgers as well."
