South Carolina preview

Mississippi State closed out the regular season by winning two of their final three games. Now the Bulldogs will try to extend their year at the Southeastern Conference Tournament in Nashville, Tenn.

Up first for No. 13 seed MSU is 12th seeded South Carolina at 6:30 p.m. CT this evening to begin the tournament.

The two teams met twice during the regular season splitting those contests. The Bulldogs won the SEC opener for both in Starkville on Jan. 9 56-54 and South Carolina getting the upper hand last week in Columbia 79-72.

Freshman guard Craig Sword led State in both games with 18 and 20 points respectively. Junior guard Brian Richardson (6-4, 175) paced the Gamecocks with 20 points in the first game while junior guard Brenton Williams (5-11, 175) had a 38-point outburst off the bench last Wednesday.

The Bulldogs hold a 17-9 edge in the series but it is South Carolina who has had the better hand in the SEC Tournament. The Gamecocks are 2-1 against Mississippi State in the SEC Tournament winning in 2001 and 2006. The Bulldogs won the 2009 meeting in the second round, 82-68.
