Heels Heating up with Ryan?
Matt Ryan is a coveted basketball prospect. The 2015 super shooter from Iona Prep (NY) has been one of the hottest basketball recruiting targets of the fall and winter season and things are really starting to pick up steam with Ryan and the schools chasing him.
"I really wasn't expecting this to be happening yet," Ryan told nypost.com in November. He's got handfuls of offers and he's seeing growing interest from many blue blood programs in the country, such as Kentucky, Duke and North Carolina.
Ryan tells TarHeelIllustrated.com that things have really been picking up with the Tar Heels.
"I have really high interest (in UNC)," said Ryan via text message. "
UNC assistant coach Hubert Davis has led the UNC charge for Ryan. First contact was made by the former UNC shooter and current assistant coach, back in November. And things have been developing since then at a pretty rapid pace.
"Coach (Hubert) Davis was at my game a few weeks ago. He called me afterwards to say how impressed he was with all areas of my game. He said next time he comes up, Coach (Roy) Williams would be with him."
Unfortunately, the 6-7, 205-pound junior has gotten hurt and that visit has been postponed.
"He called me Tuesday to say that he was sorry (about the injury) but he says now I have time to visit Chapel Hill and that they would really love to have me down there," added Ryan.
Ryan feels that the Tar Heels are planning to offer him soon and he's planning a visit to campus in the next few weeks.
"I believe they were going to offer when they came up to visit the next time. I'm highly interested in them. I'm looking at February 15th against Pitt to go down there," he said.
The New York shooting specialist says that his visit date isn't set in stone yet, as he has to have another conversation with the staff.
Ryan, who has a 6-9 wingspan, claims approximately 30 offers from mid and high major programs. His length helps him get off shots from all around the perimeter. And he knows full well why so many college coaches covet him.
"My biggest attraction to coached is my ability to shoot with my size."
