McQuaid on Heels' Radar
Watching the Team Texas Elite last spring and summer on the AAU circuit, a lot of scouts were there to see Elijah Thomas and Austin Grandstaff. Both prospects were high major targets of some blue blood programs.
And while both Texas prep stars impressed onlookers, many also came away talking about a slender shooter with deep range, three point efficiency and a long, lengthy frame.
Meet Matt McQuaid, the other Texas prospect who is generating a lot of buzz on his own. He's a pure shooter who is highly coveted by a lot of college programs. The 2015 SG from Duncanville (Tex.) has started hearing from the North Carolina Tar Heels too.
" They have started to text me now," said the 6-5, 183-pound sniper from just south of Dallas. " Mainly it's been Coach Hubert Davis. He is just telling me that they are interested and seeing how school is going and stuff like that. He asked me if I would be interested in them."
The interest was reciprocated by the Texas junior and he says that the UNC staff is planning to watch him on the Nike AAU circuit where he will team up with Thomas and Grandstaff again.
"Yeah it was pretty crazy," McQuaid said of the UNC interest. " They are going to watch me in the EYBL they said. "
McQuaid already has a lot of interested programs including Creighton, where he recently took a visit and got to see Doug McDermott score his 3,000th point. He's also being courted by schools such as Texas, Virginia Tech, Baylor, Texas A&M, Stanford, Michigan, Alabama, Wichita State and Oklahoma.
He wants to play his college basketball in a program that gives him a good situation on and off the court. And he gives us the self scouting report on his game.
" I'm just looking for a school where I fit the best and where I will play the best. I'm a shooter but I can take people off the dribble and I can pass well," he added.
McQuaid shot over 45% from the arc last season on the EYBL circuit and he is currently ranked as the 58th best junior nationally according to Rivals.com
