Recruiting picks up for Gilchrist
In its recruitment of cornerback Marcus Gilchrist, Notre Dame appears to have every angle covered.
Head coach Charlie Weis and defensive backs coach [/db]Bill Lewis[/db] paid a visit to Andrews High School in High Point, N.C., on May 2, making their pitch for the 5-foot-11, 175-pound defensive back. North Carolina falls in the recruiting territory of Lewis, who pulled cornerback Raeshon McNeil out of ACC country to South Bend last year.
Notre Dame will get help in-state too, with verbal commitment Kerry Neal from Bunn, N.C., meeting up with Gilchrist last weekend at a Shrine Bowl combine. Even the coaching staff of that event between the Carolinas might help. Not only is Neal certain to be on the North Carolina squad, but Bunn High School coach David Howle will lead the team.
With 15 offers in hand including scholarships from Florida, Michigan, Tennessee and South Carolina, Gilchrist owns plenty of collegiate options. But at a minimum the handful of Irish influences should never let Notre Dame be out of sight, out of mind.
