S.C. athlete likes the ACC
Spartanburg (S.C.) Broome athlete Markish Jones is still waiting on his first scholarship offer, but he has gotten plenty of attention from college recruiters during the May evaluation period.
The 6-foot-1, 190-pound cornerback/wide receiver feels that several programs are close to offering.
"I haven't gotten any scholarship offers yet," he said. "But Virginia, North Carolina, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, Maryland and Marshall all said they were about to offer.
"Marshall and Virginia Tech both told me that they were going to sign three wide receivers and that I was going to be one of the three."
The in-state Clemson Tigers also have shown interest in Jones. He will head to Clemson this weekend for the NIKE Camp on Sunday.
"Clemson said how I do at the NIKE Camp was going to determine if I get an offer from them or not."
Currently, three ACC programs lead for Jones.
"I'd say that my favorites right now would be Virginia Tech, Maryland and Georgia Tech," he said. "I love all the ACC teams. If one of those teams offered, I would probably try to commit."
Florida State, Penn State and South Carolina are other schools that have either shown interest or that Jones is interested in.
Seminoles recruiter Kevin Steele has been by Broome High during the evaluation period. Jones plans to camp in Tallahassee this summer as well as in State College.
The in-state Gamecocks haven't shown a lot of interest to this point.
"They called my coach earlier this week," Jones said. "They said they wanted to see me."
Jones projects as either a wide receiver or cornerback. He says he doesn't prefer one ahead of the other.
"Lots of coaches have been telling me wide receiver," Jones said. "But I would have no problem playing cornerback because of my speed and my technique. I might actually be better at corner."
In addition to recruiting, Jones has been busy participating in track. He recently won four South Carolina Class 2A state championships in the 100, 200 and 400-meter dash, along with the long jump.
Jones had 35 receptions for 550 yards and five touchdowns on offense and totaled 28 tackles and five pass break-ups on defense last season.
