Smith ready to learn
One of the lesser talked about players in Iowa's 2006 recruiting class is Cleveland Glenville prospect Derrick Smith. One reason for that is the 6-foot-0, 178-pound Smith missed most of the 2005 season with a torn ACL. Smith, who will play strong safety in college, talks about his recovery from the injury, heading to Iowa City with high school teammate Arvell Nelson, learning the system at Iowa, and much more.
Q: How did your last semester of high school wrap up?
SMITH: It went pretty well. We graduate on May 31st.
Q: When are you heading out to Iowa City?
SMITH: I'm trying to leave in June for a couple weeks, then come back home, and go back again in August.
Q: What do you look forward to doing when you're on campus in June?
SMITH: Just being taught the program and learning everything I can.
Q: You're coming off an injury from last year, right?
SMITH: Yeah, an ACL injury.
Q: How's that coming along?
SMITH: Oh, lovely. I'm already running and doing football stuff on it, so it's going good.
Q: What are you looking forward to in your freshman year at Iowa?
SMITH: I just want to get to know the campus and learn the system. I want to learn how things work and keep my grades up especially.
