T.J. Simpson pledges Sun Devils
Fresh on the heels of Chandler (Ariz.) Hamilton star wide receiver Kerry Taylor's decision to pledge the Sun Devils on Thursday, ASUDevils.com received late word that fellow in-state star wideout T.J. Simpson, the state's champion sprinter at Peoria High also committed to the program.
Though he was unavailable for comment late Thursday, multiple sources confirmed the commitment of Simpson, who won the 100 meters (11.02), 200 meters (21.87) and 400 meters (48.46) at the state 5A meet, earning a clean sweep of the sprint events.
As a junior, the 6-foot-1, 170 pound Simpson caught 29 balls for 749 yards (25.8 yards per catch) and seven touchdowns. He also had a 32.1 yard average as a kick return specialist, and he figures to be a possible special teams standout at the next level.
At the Nike Combine at USC earlier this year, Simpson ran an electronic 4.51 seconds in the 40-yard dash and 4.25 seconds in the shuttle run, both results ranking him among the top 10 overall performers at the event. He also had a 31-inch vertical jump and put up 10 repetitions on the benchpress.
