Late addition to 2006 recruiting class
With players reporting to fall camp Thursday, NC State might add one more player to its roster from the Class of 2006, and in a twist of irony it was the player who originally was the first one to commit to the Pack.
Defensive tackle Gavin Smith of Wakefield High in Raleigh confirmed with The Wolfpacker late Tuesday afternoon that he is officially joining the team, pending clearance from the NCAA, which is expected to be the case.
"That's true," he said.
Smith celebrated by taking a boat out onto the lake with some friends.
His story is an unusual one. He originally committed to NC State before his junior season of high school football. During his senior year though Smith backed out of plans to enroll early at NC State and take some other visits after receiving offers from Virginia and South Carolina.
After his trip to Columbia, Smith backed off his verbal to State, and then committed to Virginia after touring Charlottesville.
