Quarterback Voss chooses Bulls
Although USF was the first to offer, at one point New Port Richey Gulf quarterback Alton Voss thought the Bulls had lost interest. Not so, and when the coaching staff reiterated that interest a few weeks ago - following a super performance by Voss at USF's Senior Showcase - the path was set.
Voss committed to USF on Friday night, disappointing several other programs that had been in the race to secure his pledge.
Voss's stock soared throughout the summer while he impressed at a variety of camps. At the N.C. State camp in Raleigh, Voss was one of 18 quarterbacks on hand and one of just three asked to remain for extra work and evaluation, Burge said. At Florida's Friday Night Lights event in Gainesville, UF coaches told Voss they wanted to sign him as an athlete, with a potential move to linebacker. And Mississippi State's offer made them the front-runner until USF became the clear choice.
That interest may have been rekindled at the Senior Showcase, where Burge said Voss ran a 4.55 forty and was throwing precise spirals all morning.
The 6-foot-2, 215-pound Voss accounted for more than 2,500 total yards and 26 touchdowns as a junior.
