LUBBOCK, Texas - Heralded Arizona State-transfer Derek Shaw arrived in Lubbock last night and did not waste any time. The former four-star prospect intently observed the Red Raiders' practice on Thursday afternoon and spent some time getting to know members of the Texas Tech football team's talented receiving corps.
RedRaiderSports.com spoke with Shaw briefly Thursday evening, where he said that he was a little frustrated at having to sit out the 2006 season due to NCAA transfer regulations. The 6-4, 215 signal caller was obviously excited to be on-campus and anxious to get back on the practice field.
Perhaps the most interesting (or at least funny) bit of news to come from of Shaw's jaunt to practice came not from something he said or did, but from something that was tattooed on his right arm: Pirate. While head coach Mike Leach's fondness for pirates is well documented, Shaw did not get the swarthy tattoo to score bonus points.
Shaw said that, prior to his senior year of high school, he promised his Oceanside teammates that if they won California's Division 1 title, he would get a tattoo of the school's mascot. By the time the Pirates won the championship, Shaw had long since forgotten about the promise; his teammates had not.
With his future at Texas Tech ahead of him and seemingly very bright, Shaw plans to enroll in the coming days once his official transcript from Arizona State is released.
