Notes: Cowboys scrimmage again
DEPTH CHART NOT QUITE SET
Last week, head coach Mike Gundy indicated that he thought the Cowboys would be pretty well set in terms of a depth chart heading into the start of school
Following Saturday's scrimmage, Gundy said they're not quite there yet, but getting closer. Additionally, he's not talking about a traditional two-deep chart. At many position groups, he's more looking for the third wheel in a pairing at a position.
"I think we're two or three practices away from that (having a set two-deep)" Gundy said. "We're not there yet.
"We need some more work to settle in and say 'ok, here's our ones. Here's our here's our third guard, third tackle, here's our third defensive tackle, third defensive end, here's our fourth linebacker out of a three-linebacker set, here's our third corner.' We're not quite there yet, but we're closer than we were a week ago."
FOCUS ON BUILDING DEPTH AND DEVELOPING YOUNGSTERS
Gundy shut down practices after last Saturday's scrimmage. The time in the interim has been partially spent with a focus on building depth and giving talented youngsters more work. Asked to compare where the Cowboys are right now to the same time last year, Gundy indicated those two areas as being in need of the most work as the season approaches.
