Nwaneri under the knife; practice notes

This time of year has not been kind to Uche Nwaneri.

Almost a year to the day ago, he found out for certain his junior season would be lost to a university-dealt suspension.

Then, on Monday evening, the offensive lineman became seriously ill and wound up having his appendix removed.

Needless to say, he did not practice on Tuesday, as Purdue returned to the practice field after training camp ended Sunday.

"I think he we'll have him next Tuesday for practice," Coach Joe Tiller said. "He's been tentatively cleared to play in the first game."

In 2002, defensive tackle Brandon Villarreal, then a backup, underwent an emergency appendectomy during the season and missed two games.
