Pettrey's excellent day the talk of kick scrimmage

It was time for a little déjà vu at the Horseshoe today during the fall kick scrimmage.

Just like in spring practice, the scrimmage came down to the end, and just like in the spring, kicker Aaron Pettrey was the hero. The redshirt freshman from Raceland, Ky., kicked a 47-yard field goal to give his Scarlet squad a 27-24 win in the kick scrimmage.

In addition, the former walk-on was perfect on the day, making all nine of his field goal attempts and possibly getting a leg up in the battle for the kicker spot.

"I got in a good rhythm out there," Pettrey said. "Once everybody starts getting behind you, it really helps you out."

With Pettrey battling Ryan Pretorius to determine who will take over from Josh Huston, the performance surely helped Pettrey's stock. Still, assistant head coach Darrell Hazell, one of the coaches on Pettrey's side today, would not tip his hand and say which kicker the coaching staff is leaning toward choosing.
