Smith making his mark

Toryan Smith got the message.


Now the freshman linebacker might be in line for playing time.


During an open practice last week, Smith crushed a scout team blocker during a kickoff coverage drill, sending the walk-on sprawling to the turf. That's exactly what Charlie Weis wanted after watching Smith trot through one of camp's first special teams workouts, an offense that let the head coach rip into the linebacker.


"I didn't quite understand the tempo so I went half speed and he singled me out," Smith said. "It's pressure. He really pushes me and wants to get the best out of me."
