'One tough cookie'

After a recent pre-season practice, apparently a particularly hard-hitting one, Coach Joe Tiller took the opportunity to praise one of his newcomers, calling running back Jaycen Taylor "one tough, tough cookie."

The junior college transfer, who has proven on more than one occasion that he certainly fits the description, will take the compliment, or at least part of it.

"I don't know about a cookie," he said, laughing, "but I believe I am tough, so I'll agree with him there."

Though official games have yet to be played, Taylor definitely doesn't appear to be contact-shy. During a scrimmage late in training camp, when the Boilermakers were working toward the goal-line, Taylor took an option pitch to the outside. At the three-yard line near the right sideline, he slammed helmet first into 6-foot-4, 240-pound linebacker Stanford Keglar, then got hit from the left by another Boiler defender.

Still, Taylor stayed upright, kept his feet moving forward, put his head down and plowed his way toward the pylon.

Touchdown.
