Meier arrives Saturday from long journey

Dylan Meier always knew he loved football. That wasn't in doubt. But after playing through the 2004 season with a serious shoulder injury and then sitting out last season following major surgery on his right throwing shoulder, the scope of his love for the game became perfectly clear.

"It hits you like a freight train when the game is taken away from you. You have to battle back and you learn to appreciate what the game means to you," Meier said. "The day has come and Coach (Ron) Prince always talks about living in the now and the power of the present."

The official return of Dylan Meier to the football field did not take place in spring drills or when fall camp opened. That day will be Saturday evening when Meier lines up as the starting quarterback for the Wildcats when the Ron Prince Era opens at Bill Snyder Family Stadium against the Illinois State Redbirds.

Prince named Meier his starting quarterback Sunday night in a close battle with talented freshman Josh Freeman.

"The day hasn't come yet, so we're still taking it one day at a time. We're still taking snaps to get ready for Saturday," Meier said. "I expect Josh to keep nipping at my heels. Bottom line we're just each other better. I will go out an do my think and Josh will do his."
