Illinois lands D.C. ATH

Illinois offensive coordinator Mike Locksley got his first Washington, D.C. target this past weekend when Dunbar High School athlete Nathan Bussey committed to the Illini.

"Nate committed last night," said Dunbar head coach Craig Jeffries. "Illinois was his only D1A offer and they recruited him like he was their top target from the start. Other schools talked and talked about offering and said they wanted more tape and all that, but Illinois recruited him hard from the start."

Bussey will get a chance to play quarterback if he wants it as Illinois is recruiting him as an athlete.

"He went up there this summer and had a great camp," said Jeffries. "They like him at safety because he's big and can run, but they said he could try quarterback first if he liked. They've been very open with him."

Bussey's ex-teammate Vontae Davis and many other Maryland/D.C. players on the Illinois roster made him comfortable on his recent visit.

"That helped," said Jeffries. "There's a great connection there and coach Locksley recruits this area hard."

Bussey's teammate, wide receiver Arrelious Benn, is a top target of the Illini as well.

"This won't affect Arrelious I don't think, but it's to Illinois credit that they recruited Nate as hard as they recruited Regis (Benn's nickname)," said Jeffries. "You could see the interest was there."
