Always a big game

Yes, West Virginia is ranked number eight in the country. Yes, the Mountaineers have an 8-1 overall record, 3-1 in the Big East. Yes, Pitt can play the role of spoiler when the Panthers face WVU tonight at Heinz Field.

But that's not what it's really about.

Yes, WVU ran for 451 yards on Pitt in the Thanksgiving Day game last season. Yes, the Mountaineers made the Panthers defenders look like they were standing still en route to a 45-13 victory. Yes, that game was an embarrassment of a season finale for Dave Wannstedt's first season as Pitt head coach.

But that's not what it's really about.

What it's really about is Pitt versus West Virginia. What it's really about is the Backyard Brawl.

"If you're 10-0 or 0-10, a win against West Virginia means the same," senior quarterback Tyler Palko said this week. "It's a pride game. In my eyes, any other implications, as far as your season goes, are secondary when you're playing these guys. And that's the way they feel, I'm sure."
