Smith close to decision?

Houston Chavez High School had their first Division I athlete commit when Harold Turnage signed with Texas A&M this month.

They might have their second as early as next week in linebacker Jarvis Smith. Smith had two all-district seasons at Milby High School as a freshman and sophomore. He transferred to Chavez after his sophomore season and was forced to play junior varsity football last year due to transferring within the district.

"Jarvis is a tremendous player and will make our team so much better this season on defense," Chavez coach Dr. Mike Jackson said.

Smith has been offered by Baylor and Kansas State, but is being pursued by Texas A&M and LSU. However, he has a leader that could receive his verbal commitment next week.

"I'm meeting with his father and I think they will commit to Baylor next week," Jackson said. "It's close to home and it's in the Big 12. His father is good buddies with Jason Phillips, who is recruiting him. I think they went to high school together.

"They are telling him that he can come in and get on the field right away at linebacker. He likes Texas A&M and the thought of played with Harold (Turnage), but they haven't offered yet. He wants to get something solid before we begin spring ball."
