Nickel back role could be committee job

Technically it's not a starting position. Reality suggests otherwise.

So as Notre Dame continues work on its nickel defense this week, the coaching staff will again attempt to find a defensive back capable reading offenses on the fly, working over slot receivers, matching up with an opponent's best wide out and supporting the run like a linebacker. Oh yeah, and they have to do it all on top of their regular duties as a boundary or field corner.

"Most of the time people will attack your nickel position with their best receiver," said defensive backs coach Bill Lewis. "You want to make sure you have the best guy at that spot as you can."
